MPs’ clamour continues for help for community energy at Energy Bill’s Report Stage

5th September 2023: the Government’s Energy Bill was debated in the House of Commons. Previously, the Government had removed two clauses that would enable community energy groups to sell their clean power locally. However, they had also recently announced a new £10 million Community Energy Fund to help community groups in England start or expand their community energy schemes.

Pressed by MPs during the debate, Energy Minister, Andrew Bowie, responded by announcing two additional supportive steps from the Government:

  1. The Government will consult on how to remove the barriers preventing community energy from supplying their power locally.

  2. The Government will publish an annual report to Parliament on progress on removing these barriers.

We welcome this commitment from the Minister and thank him for it. Click the link below to watch our highlights video of the debate.
