Community energy refers to renewable energy projects owned and run by local people, rather than by large utilities. These projects create local jobs, alleviate fuel poverty and bring significant local revenue from renewable energy generation.
At present, community energy schemes cannot sell their clean energy to local people because of the massive costs involved. This makes it extremely hard to set one up and there are only a few hundred across the UK.
There could be many thousands more. With supportive policy, we could have enough local renewable energy schemes to power 2 million homes within a decade.
We are campaigning to change the law to enable this. Before the July 2024 General Election, we brought a cross-party group of 326 MPs on board in support. This backing led to the introduction of the Community Energy Fund, a £10 million fund for community energy projects in England.
However, for community energy to achieve its huge potential, market reform is still needed.

The Local Electricity Bill can play a key role. If made law, it would empower community energy groups to start up and sell their clean electricity directly to local people. This would build local resilience and reduce our climate emissions simultaneously.
